The Health & Healing Benefits of Fresh Coconut

The word “coconut” known as kalpa vriksha in Sanskrit which translates to the tree of life, is an amazing frCoconutuit that has been classified as a “superfood.”  Many cultures worldwide have been reaping its nutritional benefits for millennia.

Its antiviral, anti fungal, antibacterial, anti parasitic, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties are known to boost the body’s immunity.  Although it is highly nutritious, it is best consumed in moderation.  It is a good source of fiber, high in the energy producing B-vitamins as well as the alkalinizing minerals of calcium, magnesium, potassium and electrolytes.  The supply of these alkalinizing minerals supports the development of strong, healthy bones and teeth.  Without them and when the body is overly acidic, it will leech these minerals out of the bones, thus weakening them which will inevitably lead to osteoporosis or porous bones.

Some of its other benefits include balancing out blood sugar without weight gain, lowering cholesterol and heart disease.  Recent research has indicated that because coconuts are metabolized into energy in the liver, they may have a positive effect on the functioning of the brain in such neurological disorders as Alzheimer’s.  Coconuts which are made up of saturated fat, differ from food that is made up of hydrogenated fat on account of their fatty acids.  The former is made up of  medium chain fatty acids where as the latter is made of long chain fatty acids.  This accounts for their difference in metabolization.  Coconuts aid in the absorption of vitamins and minerals.   They are optimum for people who are lactose intolerant and because coconut crystals have a low glycemic index of 35 compared to 55 for other sweeteners, it is perfect for individuals who need to be vigilant of sugar consumption.  Coconuts contain lauric acid which is a nutritional fat which is also found in mother’s breast milk.

Coconut oil can be used as a massage oil with a few drops of your favorite aromatherapy oil to sooth sore muscles.  The vitamin E in the oil will soften your skin and keep you young looking.
