Chemicals to be on the look out for in our food

One of the books that I am currently reading in order to become “holistic board certified,” is chock full of information on numerous chemical additives which have been FDA approved and are found in many of the foods that we buy.  These include pesticide residues, glutamic acid, hydrogenated oils, bovine growth hormones, artificial colors, artificial flavors and preservatives.

Steer clear of aspartame, the artificial sweetener found in so many packaged products and be on the look out for neotame, which is 30 -60 times more potent than aspartame.  These additives contain glutamic acid which is known to wreck havoc on brain cells.  A study on test animals found that these additives are capable of causing too much excitement of the cells in the brain which eventually leads to cell death.  They are known as “excitotoxins.”  Other additives containing glutamic acid include autolyzed yeast, calcium caseinate, gelatin, glutamate, hydrolyzed corn gluten, hydrolyzed protein, monosodium glutamate, sodium caseinate, textured protein, yeast extract, yeast food and yeast nutrient.
