Currently, there are a myriad of interrelated issues that prevent patients from obtaining the proper care they seek. First and foremost, these issues have to do with the ego and if left unchecked, will take control of each and every situation. It also pertains to the dismal truth that everything is about making money including how insurance companies reimburse only if a procedure is done, how new technology is aggressively marketed and the pharmaceutical companies that prosper by continually exploiting doctors with their so-called magical drug elixirs.
Medicine, indeed, appears to be nothing more and nothing less than a pure mix of science and soul. We, as a society, are just beginning to grasp the concept that good wholesome conversation and its counterpart, active listening, are crucial to helping someone heal. The old concept of the doctor knows best is being replaced with a two-way dialog that consists of active listening and clear communication by both parties. Each person is unique and needs to be treated as such. Although feelings/emotions are important to show that one cares, they must not get in the way when working with a client.
Like many other professions in the fast paced world in which we live, helping others heal, lacks a degree of thoroughness that once existed. This can be attributed to the relentless desire of following the path of the almighty dollar. Doctors are shortening their visits with patients so they can jam more people in a day and make more money. This leads to doing less than a thorough job. Medicine and healing have become nothing more than a big business. The time has come for this to change, however. The greedy pharmaceutical companies who persistently exploit doctors with their concoctions are slowly being replaced by doctors informing patients of preventative measures such as lectures, classes and workshops on the importance of consuming a diet that is rich in the proper nutrients along with other healing modalities such as meditation, yoga and massage. It is pertinent to inform people how they can keep themselves healthy in order to minimize unnecessary doctor visits and help prevent debilitating degenerative illnesses.
